One of the most interesting things about the current year involves the mathematics of the standings. Since the Pats and Cougars are 20-0, it means that the rest of the teams, as a group, are 20 games below .500.
In the AFC there are only four teams with winning records (over .500), none in the South. If the season had already ended, two teams without winning records, the Chiefs and the Colts, would make the playoffs.
The NFC is not that much better. There are five teams with winning records, and the Giants would make the playoffs without one. Nobody has really been eliminated from contention in the NFC. The Cowboys are in dead last place out of the 16 teams in that conference, but they are only two games behind their division leaders.
