In a perfect world, should Rose be back in baseball and/or eligible for the Hall? Beats me.
But we do not live in a perfect world. In this world, the commissioner has no choice but to uphold the ban unless there is a change to rule 21(d), because it is absolutely certain that Rose broke the rule, and the rule is completely clear about what the punishment must be. There is no gray in this debate. It is black or white, and Pete is 100% black.
Is that a good thing? Does Pete deserve a chance? I dunno. Maybe. Maybe not. As my hero Dalton would say, "Opinions vary." But Dalton was a philosophy major, and those are questions for a philosopher, not for a guy who loves facts and statistics.

As I understand it, the HOF has its own rules not controlled by the commissioner. They could choose to allow Rose on the ballot despite his lifetime ban from MLB.
ReplyDeleteYes, that is covered in the linked article. The HOF has a rule that anyone on MLB's permanently ineligible list is ineligible for the Hall. The directors of the Hall can change or abolish that rule at any time, without consulting the commish. The Hall existed for 55 years without that rule, so abolishing it would not be all that daring.
