I had a poster of him on my closet door when I was a teen. There were no other athletes on display. He was special.

I was just discussing him recently with friends. Excepting Babe Ruth, he is probably the most-loved American athlete in history, meaning loved as a man, not as a great athlete, though he was that as well. Long after he was a threat to win any tournaments, he was still attracting larger crowds than the contenders, and every one of his fans felt he had a personal connection with the guy.

Arnie's Army will salute and fly the flags at half-mast for their departed general.
