4 Modern Movies That Were So Good ... Until These Scenes

UPDATED: 4 Modern Movies That Were So Good ... Until These Scenes

A reader's suggestions:

I don't think the John Candy movie Summer Rental was 'so good' and the scene didn't ruin the movie, but for the last half hour or so, the film went from being a comedy to being a boat race.

Similarly, the movie Used Cars that was 'so good' went from being a very funny comedy to, in the last half hour or so, being a car race.

Scoop's comment: I see your point on Used Cars, but I think the boat race in Summer Rental was pretty damned funny. I mean c'mon. The "snobs" were racing million dollar yachts and John Candy was competing in a nautical-themed floating seafood restaurant - and Candy finally won by using his oversized pants as an extra sail. If the film had any flaws, I forgave them for the final scene, in which the crusty old bogus sea captain (Rip Torn) and the tourist (John Candy) row off into the sunrise in a dinghy, drunkenly singing the old salt's favorite sea shanty, a ditty he learned while on his mother's knee - the theme from The Love Boat. "Come abard, wa're expectin' yeh".

  2. That's a pretty funny ending, but, while I haven't seen Summer Rental since it first came out, I recall that the boat race was filmed like it was a real boat race. I don't remember the part about Candy's pants. I remember thinking at the time something like "the scenery is beautiful, but what happened to the comedy?"

Of course I don't doubt that my memory is somewhat hazy on this, as the scene was probably much more like 10 minutes and not half an hour.
