Original ‘Blair Witch’ star Joshua Leonard: People still tell me they want their money back
I can't blame them for that. I saw it for free, and it was still way overpriced because I could have done something else with my time, which I conceive to have at least some value. Has there ever been a worse movie to get so much recognition?
Hell, let me simplify the question: Has there ever been a worse movie? I watched every episode of MST3000, and all of those awful movies they ridiculed were more rewarding than Blair Witch.
Even more outrageous than the movie itself was the Emperor's New Clothes syndrome - so many people claiming that the film had some value, presumably afraid to admit how they were conned.
Just shooting from the hip, but sight unseen I'll guess Blair Witch 2 was worse. Definitely a low bar to slide under, though. Still, unlike some films you've got no Tom Green, no Rob Schneider, no Mariah Carey...
ReplyDeleteNow if MST3k *did* Blair Witch, then you might have something.
In economics, the concept in the first paragraph is known as 'opportunity cost.'
ReplyDeleteI saw the movie with a friend of mine when it first came out because we were both taken in by the hype. We weren't as bad as sometimes radio show host Art Bell though who admitted he believed the footage was real (as if what would have essentially have been a snuff film would have been released into movie theaters.)
I remember complaining about the movie when it was released that it was hyped up garbage and the response I got (admittedly from just a few people) was that they liked the tie in the film had with the internet, that to fully appreciate the film you had to check out the movie's website because it contained a lot of the back story, or something. I replied that the film should be judged on its own merits and our debate ended because we both had valid countering positions.
Blair witch project is a horror classic. You're goofy. The second one, book of shadow, is pretty good...it just isn't a sequel. It's a movie about the first movie. Kind of clever.
ReplyDeleteThe ideas of the movies were clever concepts. The movies themselves (the original anyway) was bad movies.
DeleteI didn't find them frightening, and the three people were stupid and annoying.
