Hollywood Ending: Big Studios Cutting Losses This Weekend, Pulling Flops From Theaters Earlier Than Usual
The top movie this weekend, a slow time of year, was Tyler Perry's Boo 2! A Madea Halloween, which was made for a modest $25 million. Geostorm was in more theaters, cost five times as much, and grossed less than half as much per theater.
Another film achieving healthy financial success with a low investment is Happy Death Day, which was #1 last week, has grossed $40M, and was made for a scant $5M.
The monster success of the season is It, which cost only $35 million to make and has grossed more than the GDP. OK, maybe I'm exaggerating, but the investors in that film will be thrilled. The gross is on the north end of 300 million dollars in the USA and a similar amount in the remainder of the world.
On the red side of the ledger, Blade Runner 2049 cost $150 million to make and is about dead in the water at $74M domestic gross, although it has done better overseas ($120M).
