Ta-Nehisi Coates: Kanye West in the Age of Donald Trump

"Kanye West in the Age of Donald Trump"

Ta-Nehisi Coates, winner of the National Book Award and a MacArthur "Genius Grant," and a helluva good writer, takes a hard and controversial look at Kanye, the eccentric cultural icon and all-around egomaniac. This essay from a top African-American intellectual, after only a short time in print, has already spurred vast reams of denunciation and at least an equal amount of praise.

My thought is that Kanye is as nutty as a fruitcake, but he is free to support anyone he wants to. His skin color does not limit him to certain positions approved by me, by Coates, or by the African-American community in general. And why shouldn't we expect Kanye to like Donald Trump? They are two peas in a pod. Kanye basically IS the Donald Trump of an alternate universe. All he's missing is the orange make-up.

  1. Who knows if Kanye West really even likes Donald Trump? Kanye West is all about promoting himself and he knows that's one of the most controversial things he can say.

Personally, I find him as boring as Madonna was 30 years or so ago. As Paul Shaffer said about Madonna "I admire that she keeps finding new ways to bore us."

Scoopy, Ta-Nehisi Coates and whoever else are free to write about whoever they like, but I just point out that Kanye has no reason to exist if nobody writes about him or cares about him.
