What the Supreme Court's ruling to allow states to legalize sports gambling means for MLB, the players and Pete Rose
The answer: pretty much nothing. Sports betting is legal in Nevada now. This just opens it to more areas (like Atlantic City, for example). Obviously the players will still be forbidden to bet, just as they are now.
The only item on the table is whether sports leagues are entitled to a cut of all sports betting action. (They do not currently receive a cut on Vegas wagers, but some overseas leagues get cuts from non-American sports wagering.) The argument is that they provide the product, and therefore have the right to profit from it. I'm curious how this negotiation might affect college football and basketball.
The only other possibility for major impact is that legalized gambling in the states could cut into the profits made by offshore internet sports books, which is definitely a "who cares?" issue.
