Minghella rejected U.S. criticism for making the film about a sacred piece of American history in Romania. . What they don't understand is that this film is actually about the little-known Romanian civil war, in which the Southern Vampires and Gymnasts fought to maintain their independent way of life. Of course, the Southern Romanian Vampires were pretty much like the Northern Dark Ones except that instead of tuxedos they wore those Colonel Sanders suits. Slavery wasn't an issue. Vampires have to have slaves.
