1) Hitchens stated he was "rightwing" on Tim Russert (CNBC) this weekend--and he was clearly dumping on the democrats. Apparently he had his rebirth in the late eighties.
2) Nothing he said on Russert should make one confuse him with an intellectual.
sample: The day will never come when they [fundamentalists] will own Iraq, and there will be no one in the United States who will be able to disagree with that even if every one of their sons has been killed in this war.
3)If Hitchens is perceived as an intellectual, the world is worse off than I thought.
4) Hitchens made a rather vile statement himself regarding Moslems on the show which Russert let pass w/o comment .

Somehow, I think Hitchens's comments on Ronald Reagan may cause him to lose his membership in the conservative club.
"The fox, as has been pointed out by more than one philosopher, knows many small things, whereas the hedgehog knows one big thing. Ronald Reagan was neither a fox nor a hedgehog. He was as dumb as a stump.
I could not believe that such a smart country would put up with such an obvious phony and loon."

Hitchens pretty much hates everyone and everything, but he is definitely an independent thinker. His thoughts on the current world stage seem to be more in line with the right.
But tomorrow he will be savaging them.
I have found him to be fearless. If he thinks Islam is vile, he is willing to say it publicly. Of course, I don't always agree with him, but I admire his guts and his intellectual honesty.
