The Giants sign Zito for $126 million.
Measured by the total dollar amount, it is the sixth-largest baseball contract in history, and the largest contract ever offered to a pitcher.

Zito's ERA has been over 3.80 for three consecutive years, and his average W-L record over that period is 14-12. He was also 14-12 the previous year. Pujols has to be feeling like a sucker for taking a mere $100 million. If Zito, with his 3.83 ERA, is worth $18 million a year, Pujols is worth approximately as much as The Netherlands. Zito had a mediocre 1.40 WHIP last year, and allowed opposing batters a .257 average. In comparison, Santana's WHIP was 1.00 and batters hit only .216 against him.
