There was some good news in a week which was written off by the forecasters. Both Children of Men and Freedom Writers did substantially better than expected. Predicted to be far down the pack, they actually finished 3rd and 4th, as both of them trounced expectations by 60% or more. Each of the two comes with solid reviews. Children of Men even comes with some ecstatic reviews and an impressive 93% at Rotten Tomatoes. (And I would be greatly surprised if it fails to win an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography.)
They each averaged more than $7500 per theater, and therefore managed to trounce Happily N'Ever after in total revenues, even though the poorly reviewed kiddie film is in far more theaters!
The fourth new release was the one with Cedric the Alleged Entertainer, and it did slightly better than expected, which means it was about as popular as the war in Iraq.
Night at the Museum has now reached $164 million, and Will Smith's movie has now passed $124 million. Happy Feet and Casino Royale dropped out of the top 12, but are still going pretty strong and have reached $185m and $159m respectively.
Overall results were dead even with the equivalent weekend last year.
