The fans went crazy, as you might expect fron a town that booed Santa Claus. One of my dad's favorite stories was about the year he batted 1.000 for the old Philadelphia Cheesesteaks. He had some 600 intentional walks, 47 homers and a ground-rule double, and the home crowd in Philly booed him for 20 minutes when he hit the double. Here's a treat for long-time readers. One of my dad's stories is now "officially" true. There is a baseball book called "Why is the foul pole fair?" It's a real book. On page 102 it states, "Danny 'Suits' Sparrow of the Negro League's San Francisco Treats claimed to have hit the sign five times in an exhibition game against the Dodgers. Stark gave him one suit and promised him a new suit any time he needed it, if he'd just stop aiming for the sign."
