Weekend Box Office Results for July 6–8, 2007

There were no significant surprises. The closest thing to a surprise was that License to Wed, with almost universally contemptuous reviews, performed quite a bit better than expected by the experts. But that simply meant that it did ten million instead of eight, thus giving us little reason to raise an eyebrow.

Because of its Tuesday opening, Transformers finished its first weekend with $150 million already in the bank!

Although the weekend featured the highest gross of the past six weekends and the fourth highest of the year, it got shellacked by the comparable weekend last year, which included the mammoth opening of Pirates 2 ($132 million just by itself!). Although this weekend was 22% behind last year, it was 16% AHEAD of 2005!
