Although the aggregate was below the forecasts (only Hairspray exceeded predictions), the top twelve films as a group finished more than 25% above last year, which in turn performed above the previous year. This represented the third consecutive week of spectacular increases, and the trend may continue if next week's Superbad is true to its buzz.Rush Hour 3 pulled in fifty million, but performed significantly below expectations and below the first weekend of Rush Hour 2, which pulled in $65m in its debut.
Stardust disappointed, despite plentiful promotion, a solid cast and good reviews. It is headed for a total in the thirty million range, which would be less than half of the production budget.
The weekly chart (below) now rounds the percentage increases to the nearest 10%, which makes the variations pop out better.
