Thousands of hyphens perish as English marches on
Thousands of words which used to require a hyphen for proper orthography have now been split into two words or compressed into compound words, German style. I'm not surprised. When was the last time you saw a word written as "bumble-bee" or "leap-frog." I suppose even the stodgiest sytle manuals have been easing those old forms out.
