Surprise. The #1 film this weekend was neither the top new film nor the top film from last week. Such a situtation rarely happens. I don't remember anything similar since Wedding Crashers came from behind to edge out the Wonka film in their third week together. At any rate Bee Movie and American Gangster both did well, but Bee did a little better, with only a 31% drop from last week. Dan in Real Life also performed well, losing only 25% of its gross from last week.
The new films did not fare so well. Each of the three major releases came up about 20% short of expectations and the multi-film Horrorfest didn't even register on the seismograph. Weekend Warrior thought it would finish 9th, and it actually finished 25th.
The tepid results from the new offerings left the total gross about 12% below last year. The box office has been below the previous year in seven of the last eight weekends, the only exception being last week, with the simultaneous debut of Bee and Gangster.
