Oprah has never finished first in this poll, but has finished second or third every year since 1997. Oprah is actually listed by women as the most admoired woman, but she has far less support among men. After Clinton and Winfrey, the remainder of the top 10 most admired women are Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice (5%), actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie (3%), first lady Laura Bush (3%), former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (2%), former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto (2%), House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, author Maya Angelou, and Queen Elizabeth II (all at 1%).
This is QE2's 41st appearance on the list!
The most admired man poll is kind of interesting. President Bush won, but that's no surprise because the President pretty much always wins. It was the 27th consecutive year in which the standing President has been named. To find a case where the standing President did not win the poll, one has to go way back to 1980, when Americans rejected Jimmy Carter in favor of Pope John Paul 2.
Democrats list Bill Clinton and Republicans list George Bush as their most admoired. So which do independents prefer? Neither. They voted for Al Gore!
It's also interesting to note that people who call themselves independents tend to betray with these selections that they are, in fact, actually unregistered Democrats. Their top three choices: Gore, Obama, Clinton
