Cloverfield opened with a monstrous roar. It took in $17 million on Friday alone. No newly released film has ever taken in $30 million on a 3-day weekend in January. The only film to top that weekend total with a January opening was the 1997 re-release of Star Wars, with $35 million, and even that seems well within Cloverfield's grasp. In fact, it should hold the new release record by Saturday night, and it may even reach the the Star Wars total by then!
