Weekend Box Office Results for August 22–24, 2008

The new entries were so weak that Tropic Thunder was able to hold the lead for a second weekend. In fact, Batman finished fourth - ahead of two of the new releases!

One of the new releases did set some kind of dubious record. The Rocker became the first film in history to debut in more than 2500 theaters with an average per theater below $1000! Although in 2700 venues, it could not beat the SECOND weekend of a Woody Allen film which was in a mere 700 theaters! In fact, The Rocker came within a hair's breadth of one of the most cherished records - worst opening weekend gross for a wide release. The legendary Lucky You holds that record at $2.71 million, and The Rocker took in $2.75m. The numbers are so close that The Rocker may yet take the record when the final adjusted numbers are available later this week.

It is now a certainty that The Dark Knight will become the #1 film of this century, as measured by inflation-adjusted dollars. Shrek 2 holds that record at $503m in 2008 dollars. The ol' bat is already at $489.
