The country is now less divided by geography than by age groups. McCain actually won among voters aged 40 or older. He got exactly 50% of those voters, compared to 48.4% for Obama. What decided the election was the "under 40" vote, which was a landslide 60-38 for Obama. Excluding voters in their 30s from that calculation makes the results even more dramatic. Voters under 30 split for Obama 66-32!!!!McCain also took about 55% of the white vote, but was dramatically outpolled among all minorities. Obama's huge margin among black voters was no surprise, not just because of his own skin color, but because even white Democrats always take about 90% of the black vote. Gore took 90% in 2000, Kerry 88% in 2004, Clinton even more back in the nineties. The larger surprise was among Hispanics, where Kerry had polled only 53%, but Obama upped the ante to 66%
