- Bride Wars: 3200 theaters, 12% positive reviews. I kinda like Kate Hudson. The only problem is that in order to see her, one has to watch Kate Hudson movies. I'd rather watch bin Laden's movies than hers. (Although, to be fair, bin Laden has the advantage of performing without McConaughey.)
The critics were really hard on this one: RT's statement of consensus: "Thoroughly insufferable via a lazy script and wholly detestable characters."
- Gran Torino: 2800 theaters, 75% positive reviews. That latest drama from 78-year-old Dirty Harry. He also stars in this one. He directed The Changeling earlier this same year, and that film also received some pretty good reviews. Guy has a lot of energy for an old coot.
- The Unborn: 2400 theaters, 14% positive reviews. Sad to see Gary Oldman performing in crap like this, but I guess he has to pay the bills like everyone else.
- Not Easily Broken: 700 theaters, 37% positive reviews. Relationship drama targeted at Afro-American audiences.
- The Reader (500 theaters, 60% positive) and Revolutionary Road (135 theaters, 66% positive). Twin Oscar-bait melodramas featuring Kate Winslet in quiet despair mode.
In other words, if you want to see a pretty good new movie, the sobfests are your only choices. The horror and comedy offerings are atrocious, and there is no comedy at all which targets male audiences.
