In terms of runs allowed, the Giants have the second-best pitching staff in the majors so far, and are only one run away from first! Despite that, they are 23-23. That apparent riddle is easily solved by the fact that they have the second-worst offense! They are 29th out of 30 teams in runs scored, as well as in OPS.The Royals are in a similar situation. They have the second-best ERA in the AL, but are 23-24, presumably because Greinke can't pitch every day.
