Although Other Crap was founded centuries ago by Benjamin Franklin, who called it Ye Oryginale Crappe, the prestigious and award-winning unfounded rumor department was added in the early 1970s by Hunter S. Thompson. One of Hunter's funniest bits of gonzo journalism was when he reported in Rolling Stone magazine, as Other Crap was then known in pre-internet days, that there was a rumor circulating around that presidential candidate Ed Muskie was addicted to a rare drug called Ibogaine. When questioned about the veracity of his claim, Hunter answered that he never reported that Muskie was addicted, only that there was such a rumor, and he knew that to be 100% accurate because he started the rumor. The thing that most astounded him about the controversy was that many mainstream media outlets reported the obviously ludicrous rumor as a fact.
