Weekend Box Office Results for November 20-22, 2009

Twilight: New Moon pulled in $140m on its own, which fell short of The Dark Knight's record $158, but slaughtered the previous record for a non-summer opening, which was a mere $102m. It produced about 40% above expectations.

The second-place film, The Blind Side, a Sandra Bullock heart-warmer, took in a very respectable $34 million, more than doubling expectations. My guess is that a lot of that was driven by women who wanted to see Twilight but encountered sold-out theaters. (I know of such cases personally.)

Planet 51 took in $12 million, fourth place, right at the level of expectations.

Precious took in $17,000 per screen in its expansion. That's impressive, and far higher than any other film not named New Moon.
