Weekend Box Office Results for January 29-31, 2010

The usual news. Avatar, nearly two months after its release, took in as much as the next two films added together.

Avatar had a spectacular Saturday, taking in another $14 million. It grossed $30m for the weekend, down only 14% from last weekend. It once again took the record for this point in its maturity curve, breaking Titanic's previous "seventh weekend" record of $25.9m. It has now reached $594m in total domestic gross, which means it will not only sail past Titanic during this coming week, but will eventually surpass the berg-challenged ship by quite a wide margin. Worldwide, Avatar will probably pass two billion this week. Each week it puts a significant distance between itself and Titanic's previous global record.

The two new films performed about as expected, minus a few percent. That's bad news because expectations weren't that high. Mel Gibson's thriller took second with a tepid $17 million, while the rom-com took the third spot with $12m.
