Bottom line: same old same old. Avatar #1.There will be only two new films in wide release: Edge of Darkness (@ 3000 theaters), a thriller starring Mel Gibson; and When in Rome (@ 2500 theaters), a rom-com starring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel.
The reviews so far indicate that the Gibson film is actually pretty darned good (57% positive reviews), while the rom-com is the usual Hollywood bottom feeder (19%). One reviewer described When in Rome as follows: "To call this movie a crappy romantic comedy wouldn't just be a slight against crappy romantic comedies, it would be an insult to crap." And Other Crap takes personal offense at anything which insults crap! Say what you want about Mother Teresa. Make fun of Haitian misery. But don't knock crap.
The Gibson film is expected to finish second, with about $21 million at the B.O. The romantic comedy is slated for third, with a total in the low teens.
