This is the time of year when the studios release the films that just didn't make the cut. Here's what the week has to offer:
- Daybreakers is an R-rated vampire thriller starring Ethan Hawke and Willem Defoe. It has a respectable 60% rating at Rotten Tomatoes. Prediction: $14 million in 2400 theaters, 4th place.
- Leap Year is a bland romantic comedy with a PG rating, thus apparently targeting tweeners. It stars Amy Adams and Matthew Goode. The critics have panned it. (15% at RT.) Predictions: $11 million in 2400 theaters, 5th place.
- Youth in Revolt is the R-rated Michael Cera comedy. Although the critics have praised it (69% positive reviews), the predictions are pessimistic: a dismal $6 million in 2000 theaters, 9th place.
As you can imagine, the big three will again be Avatar, the Chipmunks, and Sherlock. During the week Avatar became the #2 film of all time world-wide, giving James Cameron the #1 and #2 spots in film history. The record for the best "fourth weekend" is $28m, and Avatar is expected to crush that. That may be the end of its weekly record-setting, because Titanic had a "fifth weekend" better than its fourth, while Avatar is expected to continue to decline. Here is the Rotten Tomatoes page for the new films.
