10th-seeded Saint Mary's defeats the Villanova Wildcats

Villanova must have been just about the weakest second seed in history. They almost lost to a 15th seed in overtime, then fell to a 10th seed.

For the record, four #2 seeds have actually lost in the first round.

  • #15 Richmond beat #2 Syracuse 73-69 in 1991
  • #15 Santa Clara beat #2 Arizona 64-61 in 1993
  • #15 Coppin State beat #2 South Carolina 78-65 in 1997
  • #15 Hampton beat #2 Iowa State 58-57 in 2001

I suppose 1997 South Carolina could probably lay claim to the title of worst #2 ever, since they not only lost to the #15 seed, but lost by 13 and got outrebounded 41-30. As the AP stringer wrote at the time, "This game wasn't expected to be close, and it wasn't!" South Carolina came into that game 30-point favorites.

Meanwhile, back in the present. The St Mary's Gaels, the WCC champs, have now won two games in this NCAA tournament. The last time they won even one was in 1959.
