ROTTEN TOMATOES: Movies Opening This Week

Easy A. Rated PG-13. Tweener flick. A clean-cut high school student relies on the school's rumor mill to advance her social and financial standing. 83% positive reviews.

The Town. Rated R. Written and directed by Affleck, who also stars. The tale of four men -- thieves, rivals and friends -- being hunted through the streets of Boston by a tenacious FBI agent and a woman who might destroy them all. Affleck's previous film as writer/director, "Gone Baby Gone" was good. DAMNED good. In my review I called it "outstanding," and y'all know that I don't gush a lot. This one is also a crime story set in Boston, and is also based on one of Affleck's favorite books, which won the 2005 Hammett Prize for excellence in crime writing. One hesitation in making a comparison between the two films: Gone Baby Gone was mercifully free of Affleck's acting, while the new one features Big Ben on both sides of the camera. (To be fair, he looks competent in the trailer, and the film also includes some real actors.) 81% positive reviews.

Devil. Rated PG-13. A group of people trapped in a elevator realize that the devil is among them. Because with an entire universe to terrorize, Lucifer can find nothing more important to do. No reviews at all.

Alpha and Omega. Rated PG. Cartoon: hitchhiking, truck stops, angry bears, prickly porcupines and a golfing goose with a duck caddy. The usual stuff. No mainstream reviews, but it was reviewed by the trades. Variety and Hollywood Reporter split.
