Danny McDevitt, who won Brooklyn Dodgers' final game at Ebbets Field, dies at 78

Danny's career was not generally remarkable, but in addition to his famous win in Brooklyn, he also pitched a few innings for the great 1961 Yankees (Mantle/Maris assault on Ruth's record). In fact, he was briefly in the Yanks' starting rotation in April of that year, but washed out and was traded to the Twins by mid-June. He did get a winning decision for the Yankees in relief before he left, one of their 109 wins that year. That may not be much, but most of us would love to have that box score and the final Ebbets victory in our resumes.

By the way, if you look at those stats accompanying his picture above, you'll see he had a mini-Dalkowski season in "C" ball for Greenwood back in 1952. In 199 innings he struck out 246 and allowed only 99 hits. So was he 21-3 or something? Nope. 12-12. The problem: 171 walks.
