Maher is pretty funny, but I have a quibble: the Green Bay Packers are not successful because the NFL's socialism supports them. That may be true of other teams, I don't know, but the Packers are a model of entrepreneurial success and rabid fan support. Unlike certain big-markets I could name (*cough* New York *cough*), the Packers could double the size of their stadium and they'd still sell out every game. If you put your name on the waiting list for season tickets, you can expect them in approximately the year 2100. I didn't make that up. That's the real stat. In a town of 100,000 people, they have 83,000 names on the waiting list. Furthermore, even though the management could slack off and still sell every ticket based on their storied tradition alone, they make every effort to present a great product. Going to a Packer game is a great experience even when they lose. They have a great facility which has terrific food, great tailgating, and a friendly atmosphere. Not to mention a kick-ass defense and Aaron Rodgers.
Granted, some of their success is because there is absolutely nothing else to do in Green Bay, but the point is that they are not successful because they are a charity case. Suck on that, Big Apple.
