Weekend Box Office Results for March 11-13, 2011

This week pitted three crappy new movies against some good returning films, so the new films had tougher-than-expected sledding, as many filmgoers opted to catch up on the good stuff they had missed in earlier weeks.

Battle LA did come in about as expected: first place; $36m.

The critically eviscerated Red Riding Hood disappointed, finishing about 40% below expectations. It was expected to take second, but came nowhere near to taking that spot from Rango. It barely held on to third against The Adjustment Bureau.

Mars Needs Moms tanked. It was expected to take in somehere near $15 million, which would have made it a big money loser even if it had happened. It didn't. Nowhere near. It took in about half of that, even at inflated ticket prices. That makes it a financial disaster. It will finish with a total gross somewhere in the neighborhood of $20 million, as contrasted to a production budget reported to be $150 million. Disney is not used to losers like that. Will heads roll?
