Mt favorite is not on the list: "intangibles." As soon as anyone starts praising a player's intangibles, you know there's really nothing good to say about the guy. Just as patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel, intangibles are the last refuge of a sports writer/announcer trying to avoid bad-mouthing a guy. Because when a player is actually good, people cite "tangibles."
But when there are no tangibles?
"Sure, he hit .215 with no power and his defense made Butch Hobson seem like the next coming of Ozzie Smith, but you can't ignore his intangibles."
(Intangibles which probably would include picking up the bar tab for the guy who made such a comment.)
