Macho Man Randy Savage died today - What Would Tyler Durden Do

R.I.P. Macho Man Randy Savage, age 58

In his pre-wrestling years, I saw him play minor league baseball in Western Florida. He was Randy Poffo then, and I took note of the name because his father Angelo had also been a wrestler. Randy was not the only one of Angelo's boys to enter the world of kayfabe. He was followed by his brother, Leaping Lanny.

In the height of his Macho Man fame I ran into him many times. He was the Slim Jim spokesman and I was a convenience store dude, so I saw him annually at conventions. I even ran into him once in a strip club, where he recognized me from the Slim Jim booth earlier in the day. We talked baseball, but he wasn't that easy to talk to and I don't remember much about the conversation, since we had both been relaxing for hours with a few dozen adult beverages, and there were many fine ladies vying for our attention. I do recall his telling me that his weight was about 180 when he was a minor league outfielder. (The reference sources say 195.) I also recall that he had a bodyguard with him at the club.
