Surprise! The Smurfs took the #1 spot by a narrow margin over C&A. The Smurfs seems likely to take the weekend, since it's the type of family pic that has a relatively low percentage of its revenues on Friday, while C&A is the type of dates-and-fanboys movie which does well on Friday.
Box Office Mojo had it predicted this way: C&A $36M (first), Smurfs $26M (third), Crazy Stupid Love $19M (fifth).
Weekend Warrior called it: C&A $43M (first), Smurfs $21M (third), Crazy Stupid Love $15M (fifth).
I'd guess that C&A will fall just a hair short of those expectations in the $34-35M range for second place, while The Smurfin' Smurfs will pull in a surprising $36-$37M for first place. Crazy Stupid Love? Who cares? It will be in the expected range, but has a chance to take fourth place instead of fifth because of the steep Harry Potter tumble, which seems to be continuing. Potter took in $47M last weekend, but looks like it's headed for about $17-$20 this week. That should not have surprised anyone because its predecessor fell from $49M in weekend two to $17M in weekend three, although the situation is not completely comparable because the earlier film was affected by the Thanksgiving weekend.
