Weekend Box Office Results for July 29-31, 2011

We still don't know which one finished first. According to studio estimates, The Smurfs tied with C&A. Oh, what a coincidence!

To be fair, the estimate for The Smurfs really looks like a guess, with every day rounded to the nearest $100,000. The C&A estimate looks like some thought went into it. For example, the Sunday number is not $10.1 million, but $10,137,000.

On the other hand, that C&A estimate is probably just a lot cagier, since it still adds up to exactly $36.2 million, even with all the seemingly precise numbers for each day. It appears that they tried to get Friday and Saturday right, then picked the exact number they WANTED for Sunday.

We will know the correct numbers in a day or two. For now each of them can claim to be #1. As the Deltas would mutter, "bullshit, blow-job, blow-job, bullshit, blow-job."

The alleged co-winners grossed $36.2 million each, on the low end for C&A's expectations, but surprisingly high for The Smurfs.

Crazy Stupid love finished with $19 million, more or less as expected, maybe even a bit better, but it did not manage to wrest fourth place from Potter, which had a solid Saturday. If the estimates are correct, Potter dropped only 54% this week. That is a surprise to me, but not a dramatic one.
