Creature set the all-time record for "Worst Per-Theater Average" for films in 1000 or more theaters

Creature set the all-time record for "Worst Per-Theater Average" for films in 1000 or more theaters.

Movieline offers their take on how this micro-budget indie stinker managed to get a wide national release.

Note: Box Office Mojo's math is obviously wrong. The average number of customers per screening could not have been as high as six. Mojo's summary article states that Bucky Larson took in $943 per screen for an average of eight customers per showing. If $943 = eight customers, it is not possible for Creature's $217 to = six.

* Creature's actual gross per theater was $217, which = approximately 28 customers, adjusting the average price for a nationwide balance between matinees and evenings. (Currently $7.97 per Box Office Mojo.) That was also the average gross per screen, since no theater showed it on multiple screens.

* Four theaters in our area carried that film, and they screened it an average of 10.75 times over the weekend. There were typically three showings on Friday, four each on Saturday and Sunday. (The average came out slightly less than eleven because one of the theaters only showed it twice on Friday).

The average number of customers per showing was therefore right around two and a half, not six.
