Well, we kinda knew that would happen. They didn't score in the first quarter and played their subs in the fourth. In between those two quarters, they scored 59 in half of a game! Houston leads the nation in scoring, as well as in passing yards. I suppose you know they are undefeated, ranked #11, and likely to climb at least a bit higher.
Realistically, how good are they? Well, college football has kind of an elite "top 15" this year, and I don't think Houston is in that group, but they would be in the next group.
Here's my logic. Houston beat UCLA 38-34. UCLA plays plenty of other good teams, so we have a basis for comparison. The teams which are among those "elite 15," namely Stanford and Texas, crushed UCLA 45-19 and 49-20, but the team in the next tier, #28 Arizona State (#19 at the time of the UCLA game), beat UCLA in a close game, just as Houston did. Granted there's not any statistical significance there with only one team for comparison, but Houston doesn't play any other good teams, so that's all we have.
Will Houston get into one of the major bowls? Yes. Assuming they keep winning:
The National Championship game will be something like LSU against Oklahoma or Oklahoma State
The Rose Bowl will be something like Stanford or Oregon against the Big Ten champ, which could be one of about five different teams, none of which will be eligible for the big championship game.
Assuming LSU makes the big show, Alabama will probably play in the Sugar Bowl against an at-large team.
Either Oklahoma or Oklahoma State, whichever one doesn't go to the big show, will probably represent the Big 12 in the Fiesta Bowl against an at-large team.
The Orange Bowl is committed to the ACC champion, so that will probably be Clemson or Virginia Tech against an at-large team.
Assuming my scenario is reasonable, the bowls would then be looking for three at-large teams to play (let's say) Alabama, Clemson, and one of the Oklahomas. Houston will probably be one of those if they remain undefeated. They'd have the best chance against the ACC champ.
