Because of the long weekend, there will be releases on Wednesday with expansions and additional releases on Friday. Based upon the reviews, I'd say you have some great choices. There are three films about film history, plus the Muppets and Santa. There are family films and erotic films. There are established geniuses trying out new genres, and there are newer filmmakers who are dazzling the critics.
The Muppets (PG) comes out Wednesday. Jason Segal loves the Muppets, and it shows - 100% positive reviews so far, which isn't surprising, since not many people would shit on the Muppets. Even misanthropes like me love the fuzzy little fuckers. Even Rex Reed would have to think long and hard before snarking out a pan of the world's most beloved use of felt, possible excepting pool tables. 3300 theaters.
Arthur Christmas (PG) also hits 3300 theaters on Wednesday. It's an animated Santa film which features some of the best actors in the British Isles: Hugh Laurie, Bill Nighy, Jim Broadbent, James McAvoy. 93% positive reviews.
Hugo - 93% positive reviews for Martin Scorsese's PG family film about the invention of movies. 1200 theaters on Wednesday.
A Dangerous Method (R) - Our favorite imaginative Canadian auteur and all-around strange dude, David Cronenberg, is back with an erotic mind-fuck film about Jung, Freud, and a mysterious patient. There's a top-notch cast headed by Michael Fassbender (Jung), Keira Knightley (the patient), Viggo Mortensen (Freud) and Vincent Cassel (I don't know, but probably playing some hyper, psychotic dude with an outrageous accent, since that's what Cassel always plays). 83% positive reviews; theater count undetermined.
Rampart (R) - Woody Harrelson as a corrupt cop. 73% positive reviews; theater count undetermined.
My Week With Marilyn (R) - Michelle Williams as the skinny, small-breasted Marilyn Monroe we all remember. OK, it seems like unlikely casting, but most critics have praised her performance as MM in this showbiz yarn about the making of The Prince and the Showgirl. 83% positive reviews; 125 theaters on Wednesday, with an additional 125 to be added Friday.
The Artist (PG-13). The positive reviews, many of them unqualified raves, have not proven sufficient incentive to get this B&W art film into more than 4 theaters. It's about the transition from silent films to talkies, and is considered a possible Oscar candidate. 96% positive reviews.
