He was an interesting man, a plain-speaking non-Hollywood type who never "spun" anything and always spoke openly and frankly about his ongoing battles against depression.
He considered himself primarily a stage actor and an artist, so he would probably hate for me to acknowledge this, but I remember him most fondly for the network TV show "Run For Your Life," which ran back when I was in high school.
In the movies, I really enjoyed his performance as an ethical pimp in the title role of Peter Bogdanovich's undeservedly forgotten Saint Jack.
And we must not forget that he played the baddie in two of my favorite movies: The Big Lebowski and Road House (see below).
