4 Sequels Hollywood Should Have Made by Now | Cracked.com

4 Sequels Hollywood Should Have Made by Now | Cracked.com

I've always said that Hollywood really missed the boat with the Fletch series. Instead of that piece of crap sequel they eventually did, they had a beautiful sequel already written. The book Carioca Fletch begins precisely where the first movie ended, with Fletch and his lady walking along the beach in Rio. She suddenly disappears, strange shit starts to happen, and the game is on. Fletch purists don't care for Carioca Fletch because it's not really about Fletch. I disagree with their appraisal. Although the mystery and Fletch's personality take a back seat to atmospheric elements, it is actually one of the best books of the nine in the series, called "The best novel written about Latin America by someone not Latin American," and it is perfect for a movie since it features some supernatural elements, and the exotic backdrop of Rio life during Carnival.

Assuming that worked out, the next film could have been Fletch and the Man Who, in which Fletch gets to use all of his wit when he becomes the unlikely press secretary for a presidential candidate.

Oh, it's (probably) too late now, certainly too late to do it with Chevy Chase, but some good screenwriter could have turned those books, then the others in the series, into terrific comedy/mystery movies. Maybe it could still happen. I'd bet that Ryan Reynolds, who has a good touch for both comedy and action, would be a great Fletch.

  1. Absolutely spot-on with Reynolds. I've heard Zach Braff and Jason Lee bandied about for the role, but I think Reynolds would be better than either one.
