Does Santorum really have a problem with female voters?

Michigan exit polls: are political pundits total idiots?

I have heard several pundits say today that Rick Santorum is having problems with female voters, so I checked the Michigan exit polls to see just how big a problem it is.

Turns out it does not exist at all.

Not at all. Not even a little bit.

He pulled 38% of female voters and 38% of males.

Although Santorum and Gingrich seem like the most likely candidates for the title, the candidate who has the biggest problem with female voters is actually Ron Paul. Paul pulled 14% of male voters, but only 9% in the female group, and almost all of those five points migrate over to Romney.

  1. This is somewhat misleading, in that the exit polling only covers individuals who voted in the Republican primary. Santorum may not in fact have problems with Republican women. My understanding, though, was that Democratic and independent women would be less likely to "crossover" and vote for Santorum than, say, Romney. You'd have to survey all women, as well as Republican women, to really know the answer.
