Weekend Box Office Results for March 9-11, 2012

Weekend Box Office Results for March 9-11, 2012

The Lorax did win the weekend, as expected, but John Carter came closer than many insiders expected. The final tally was $39M-30M. Disney has no reason to rejoice about John Carter's results, however, because the budget for that film was purportedly well above $200 million and the project could emerge as a historically memorable financial debacle.

Silent House underperformed dramatically. It finished either fourth or fifth, and its gross was a mere $7M (the expectation was about $11M), which means that it barely beat the much-maligned Eddie Murphy movie.

Eddie's film actually did quite a bit better than expected, although that was still nothing to write home about ($6 million actual versus an expectation in the $4M range.) It maintains a perfect 0% at RT.

Friends With Kids was barely a blip on the radar with $2 million (13th place), but that's deceptive. It actually provided the best news of the weekend by finishing 3rd in revenues per theater. The low aggregate suffered from a very timid roll-out: 374 theaters.
