There are four wide releases competing for a piece of what is likely to be quite a small pie. Three of the four have received good reviews. (The other has not been screened for critics.)
Dredd 3D may be the best movie in the lot. It's the ultimate rarity: a universally acclaimed remake. (90% positive reviews; 2400 theaters; rated R for violence, language and some sexual content; $12M predicted - 3rd place)
End of Watch is also supposed to be quite good. It's a cop drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal. (86% positive reviews; 2900 theaters; rated R for violence and language; $9M predicted - fifth place)
Trouble With the Curve is the Clint Eastwood baseball movie. Clint loves baseball stadiums because there are always so many empty seats to talk to. (64% positive reviews; 3100 theaters; PG-13; $18M predicted - first place)
House at the End of the Street is a horror film with today's "it" girl, Jennifer Lawrence. It has not been reviewed and the word on the street is that it sucks big-time. It'll probably still leapfrog over some better-reviewed films in the dollar derby. Thanks, Katniss. (2600 theaters; PG-13; $14M predicted - second place)
