New Movies In Theaters Nov 21st - Rotten Tomatoes

It's Thanksgiving weekend, so there will be plenty of new films to choose from (and you can still go see Lincoln, sparkly vampires, or 007). All of the following will be in theaters today except Hitchcock, which debuts Friday (if you can find it).

Silver Linings Playbook is a family drama which is considered a strong Oscar contender, but probably not with much box office allure. 91% positive reviews; 357 theaters; rated R for several things, including T&A from Brea Bee.

Rise of the Guardians (PG) is an epic animated adventure for family audiences. It features a cast of stars: Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Isla Fisher, Jude Law. 78% positive reviews, 3600 theaters.

Red Dawn (PG-13) is a remake of the Patrick Swayze ... er ... classic. Sorry, nobody can replace Dalton. The movie has received only 11% positive reviews, but you won't have any trouble finding it and seeing for yourself because it'll be in 2700 theaters.

Life of Pi is the latest from Ang Lee. It's the one you've been seeing ads for - a PG family film about a kid and a tiger in a rowboat together. They must have spent as much on commercials as they did on making the movie. The general critical consensus, per RT: "A 3D adaptation of a supposedly 'unfilmable' book, Ang Lee's Life of Pi achieves the near impossible -- it's an astonishing technical achievement that's also emotionally rewarding." 83% positive reviews; 2900 theaters.

Despite the gravitas imparted by the combined acting awards for Helen Mirren and Dr Lecter, Hitchcock will be in only 17 theaters. Not sure what the deal is, or whether there is a plan for a roll-out later. The reviews of this film, which is about the making of Psycho, have been generally good (73% positive).

Box office prognosis:

The sparkly vampires should hold on to the #1 spot, despite a mammoth drop in the neighborhood of 70%.

Rise of the Guardians could challenge for #1, but if it fails to do so, should easily take #2 with about fifty million over the five-day weekend ($35 million in three days)

007 and Lincoln should be #3 and #4.

Life of Pi should battle for the fifth spot with Wreck-It-Ralph, each grossing about twenty million over five days.

Red Dawn is not expected to do well, but it should finish seventh by default with a 5-day gross in the high teens.

Silver Linings Playbook might take in five million over the long weekend, which is about the most you can expect from 350 theaters. That should be enough for 10th place.
