New Movies In Theaters Feb 15th - Rotten Tomatoes

New Movies In Theaters Feb 15th - Rotten Tomatoes

There are four new films in wide release this weekend, but all advance signs indicate that you should probably blow them all off and take this opportunity to see Silver Linings Playbook if you haven't already.

A Good Day to Die Hard (3550 theaters). You all know what this is. I kinda wanted to see it, but many critics have been absolutely vicious to #5 in this franchise (15% positive reviews). Example: "There's nothing unifying in A Good Day To Die Hard on a cinematic level besides the fact that every single scene, taken individually, sucks." It's rated R for language and violence.
Reader comment: "Saw Die Hard last night. It's not the worst effort in the franchise, but it's not something I'd want to see again. The direction, editing, and cinematography were all crap. There were more fast cuts than a butcher shop, the pacing was weird, and they did that 'move the camera around slightly all the time to impart interest' thing that you find in really insipid TV shows. The worst parts were the car chase through Moscow ..."

Safe Haven (3200 theaters). This is the latest PG-13 chick-flick based upon yet another sappy novel from the dreaded Nicholas Sparks. According to the critics (13% positive reviews), it's even worse than it sounds.

Beautiful Creatures (2950 theaters). "A supernatural love story set in the South." 'Nuff said. This one is probably better than it sounds, since critics were about evenly divided on its merits, but it's not easy to get excited about a PG-13 supernatural romance with 46% positive reviews.

Escape From Planet Earth 3D (3300 theaters) is an animated PG kiddie flick from The Weinstein Company. Only 29% of the reviews were positive, but the general consensus is that the film is pretty funny despite its other flaws.

BOX OFFICE:

I suppose Bruce Willis will rule the roost with about $30 million for the weekend ($40M counting the holiday Monday).

Safe Haven will battle last week's champ, Identity Thief, for second place, with both films hovering right around $20M for the four-day weekend.

Beautiful Creatures and Escape from Planet Earth should take the fourth and fifth spots with totals in the mid-teens for four days.

  1. Saw Die Hard last night. The worst parts were the car chase through Moscow - after Goldeneye's triumphant effort, why even bother?
