There are only two new movies in wide release this week:
Side Effects (2600 theaters) is "a provocative thriller about Emily and Martin (Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum), a successful New York couple whose world unravels when a new drug prescribed by Emily's psychiatrist (Jude Law) - intended to treat anxiety - has unexpected side effects." The reviews of this Steven Soderbergh film have been highly positive. The 81% positive score is especially impressive among R-rated thrillers because that genre is not prone to great reviews.
Identity Thief (3100 theaters) is an R-rated lowbrow comedy starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy. The critics have not been kind (28% positive reviews).
===================
Box office: the Bateman comedy should finish #1 with a gross in the neighborhood of $20 million. Side Effects will battle Warm Bodies for the #2 spot, with both films likely to finish in the $10-$12M range.
Nudity: Based on the MPAA statement, the comedy seems to have no nudity, despite the R rating. The R rating for Side Effects is justified in part by nudity, but I don't know precisely what flesh is exposed or who exposes it.
