At one point it was a blow-out, 51-31 in favor of ninth-seeded Wichita. OSU came back to make it a game, but they ran out of time.
The aptly named Shockers beat both the #1 and #2 seeds in their region, and have made the final four for the second time, nearly 50 years after their other appearance in '65. That 1965 final four was an odd one. Not only did Wichita State make it for the only previous time in their history, but unlikely Princeton also made it for the one and only time on the back of future Senator, Rhodes Scholar, and New York Knick Bill Bradley. Princeton did not award athletic scholarships and their team basically consisted of Bradley and some guys who learned to play basketball against their family butlers. That formula was good enough to take them to third place in the national tournament.
Wichita, after winning a deliberate 54-46 regional game to make the final four in 1965, could not compete with the fast pace of the big gunners. They gave up 108 to UCLA in the semis and 118 to Princeton in the consolation game. Senator Bradley embarrassed the Wichita State defense with 58 points.
(UCLA won the tourney.)
