Box office disaster: Benedict Cumberbatch's 'The Fifth Estate' bombs

Box office disaster: Benedict Cumberbatch's 'The Fifth Estate' bombs
"The Fifth Estate bombed in its opening weekend with a truly awful $1.7 million from 1,769 theaters, making it the worst debut for a film opening in at least 1,500 theaters this year. (Sorry, Paranoia!)"

By the way, the all-time record in this category is held by a 2011 film called Creature, which took in only $327,000 in 1507 theaters. I don't even remember a theatrical release for that film, which disappeared from all 1500+ theaters the following weekend. I do remember that Jennifer Lynn Warren got very naked in one scene, while Lauren Schneider and Amanda Fuller took off their tops.

In other results, well, there was no good news for the new releases, except that 12 Years a Slave had a robust debut in 19 theaters.

Carrie bombed the least, but its third-place debut was not what the doctor ordered. Actually, the fight for second place was so close that Carrie might creep up there when the final numbers are in, but the film nonetheless underperformed relative to expectations.

Escape Plan (Stallone/Schwarzenegger) failed to reach double figures.
